The distance between Venice and Trieste is about 120 miles; from Venice to the foothills of the Alps is about 60 miles.

Amy Proni lived near Aviano, in the province of Pordenone, about two hours by car west of Trieste, from 1980 to 1983. The NATO air base at Aviano was home to about 2000 American military personnel in the early 1980s. The base became more important and well-known in the 1990s, when NATO planes were used to intervene in the war between Serbia, Croatia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
