Trieste is a jewel of a city on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, just west of Slovenia. This is where Maria Zampieri Proni was born, and where she and Oscar Proni attended high school.

You can't tell by looking at the map, but Trieste is very hilly, reminiscent of San Francisco, California.

For nine years after World War II, Trieste was a disputed territory, fought over by the Yugoslavians and the Italians, and administered by the British and the Americans. See the Wikipedia article on the Free Territory of Trieste.
